MUDP Project
The Vision that Started it All
OpenCirc was born as a pioneering MUDP (Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration) project. It was established through a strategic collaboration between Frame, DTU, and Azilis to solve a fundamental crisis: the industry’s inability to scale circularity due to fragmented, unstructured data.
The project was necessitated by the "data silos" of the real estate sector—where information on buildings and materials was trapped in inconsistent formats, preventing collaboration and blocking the path to a circular economy
The Innovation
As an integrated open-access tool, the original MUDP project set out to build the digital infrastructure required to turn buildings into "material banks." The core development focused on:
- A Unified Framework: Creating a cloud-based data model and database to collect and process material data from design to decommissioning.
- Seamless Integration: Enabling data exchange between diverse platforms, including BIM(Building Information Modeling), sustainability documentation, and GHG emission calculators.
- Standardized Material Passports: Providing the technical foundation to track material chemistry, carbon footprints, and technical specifications across the entire value chain.
Why it Matters
- Overcoming Fragmentation: By replacing unstructured PDFs and spreadsheets with a "common digital language," the project aimed to eliminate the technical barriers that slow down the construction process.
- De-risking Circularity: Reliable lifecycle data removes the liability risks associated with material reuse, making it possible for stakeholders to trust and utilize recycled components.
- Open Source Resilience: Designed as an open-access framework, the project ensured that this critical infrastructure would remain accessible to all industry players, preventing vendor lock-in and fostering collective innovation.
The MUDP project laid the groundwork for everything OpenCirc is today, proving that transparent, standardized data is the ultimate catalyst for resource efficiency in construction.
